My sandals broke today as soon as I stepped into work. As any sane person would, I taped it up with a million layers, stapled it in a few stabs, and taped it some more.
Ridiculous? Maybe. Pro problem solver? Absolutely.
This moment, however small, was a big smack in the face that vacation is over and I’m back to reality. In all fairness, my vacation was over two and a half months ago, give or take. Every day since I’ve been back, I took baby steps. Very small baby steps. And by baby steps I mean I went back to work and shoved the rest of my to-do list into the depths of my purse, never to be found again. That is, until my container with my cut up watermelon pieces leaked all over my purse during my commute and had to be cleaned out.
I now have a lovely, watermelon smelling, soggy to do list that is staring at me in disappointment. It’s like I could feel it screaming, “You still haven’t gone to the dentist for that root canal and wisdom teeth removal? You still haven’t gone to the damn gym you pay $59 monthly for? You still haven’t renewed your health card like the dumbo living in Canada, the land of free health care, without actual health insurance?” So as I stare back at this list, I realize I have two options. Throw it back into the depths of my purse and get to it eventually or the less appealing option – prioritize and get my s**t together now.
The list is tragically long and it may take a while until I catch up to the force of nature lifestyle I took on before I packed my bags and visited my parent’s home country. When it comes to a reality bounce after a vacation, it’s easier to lose touch with it than to play catch up. Even when part of reality is a side hustle that you’re highly passionate about. No one is perfect. Especially me – beyond far from it. That’s another thing about reality. Acknowledging when you’re slacking and doing something about it.
Today, I decided to get proactive about my life in all aspects thanks to the tragedy that was ripping out my favourite sandals. Maybe everything does happen for a reason. And with that, I’m pleased to say I’m back in hustle mode and super excited with what is soon to come. Next step on my to do list? Get a new pair of sandals, of course!
